UPDATE: “College affordability is an issue that is critical for creating an America that is built to last,” U.S. Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter said during her prepared testimony.
She outlined the administration’s proposals, many of which were explained in President Obama’s State of the Union and University of Michigan speeches last week: a Race to the Top competition for higher education that would award institutions that are keeping costs low; a college “scorecard” that would give prospective students a glance at quick facts about an institution; a First in the World fund that would award money to universities that find ways to boost college completion.
“The government can’t do this alone,” she said. “We have to share in this responsibility.”
Sens. Lamar Alexander, Patty Murray, and Bennet have joined the hearing.
