We’re excited to (finally) announce that Mark Anderson, a fifth-grade special education teacher in the Bronx, won our Teacher Sector school supply contest. He gets $450 to put toward school supplies!
“We never have enough of anything,” said Anderson, who teaches in an inclusion classroom with another teacher. “I can think of a thousand ways to use it.”
Anderson, who previously worked in retail and hospitality management, decided to become a teacher because of his interest in education policy. By teaching, he says, he can better grasp policies that affect children and learning.
“There’s no better way to understand policy” than to actually work in the field, he said.
He trained through the NYC Teaching Fellows, which he said provided a good balance of immersion and instruction.
Nowadays, he said he uses “anything technology-related” to motivate his students.
Teachers, is there anything you’ve purchased for your classroom that has made a real difference in student learning?
