There’s no swifter route to the top of the New York Times most-emailed list than a story that plays on the anxieties of college strivers, e.g. “Many With New College Degrees Find Job Market Humbling.” What if the talismanic object around which I’ve organized my entire life turns out to be made of fool’s gold?! Tell me more!! The problem is that national papers like the Times and the Post have been running variations on this story since the 1970s and they always turn out to be wrong. That’s the premise of my new article in The New Republic.
